כנס בינלאומי מרכזי זה נערך בתל-אביב במאי 1990, במימונה ובארגונה המלא של עמותת חי. היה זה הכנס הראשון מסוגו בעולם לחלופות לשימוש בחיות מעבדה. אחת התוצאות המיידיות של הכנס הייתה הפסקת ביצוע ניתוחים בכלבים בריאים כחלק מתוכנית האימון של חובשים (פאראמדיקים) צבאיים בצה"ל, ומעבר לחלופות שלא באמצעות בעלי חיים. למרבה הצער חוזר צה"ל בהדרגה לשימוש בכלבים.
